Marine Fossils from Tennessee

The Cretaeceous period Coon Creek formation in Tennessee has fossils that are fascinating to study because the conditions under which these fossils were preserved allowed the original material to remain intact! These shells were collected on a DMC field trip. They are a bivalve called Pterotrigonia thoracica, which also happens to be the Tennessee state fossil.
