Sand with Slag

This sand was collected in a creek near an old iron furnace. When iron ore is heated until it is molten, the heavy iron sinks and impurities float. When the molten mass is cooled, the impurities, now called slag, are discarded. The glassy blue bits and green bits are slag from the old iron furnace. The rest is mostly quartz and maybe some limestone, but the cylinder shaped bit just to the right of center is a fossil that appears to be a piece of a bryozoan. The one with dots towards the upper left may be a piece of a fossil too.
